CCWA Fossil Fuels Program Newsletter Hi Clive, Australia’s energy crisis is proving that fossil fuels like oil and gas are expensive, unreliable and dangerous. Fuel prices are soaring for motorists and businesses, while oil and gas companies are raking in super profits. Polling by the Australia Institute shows that — whether they intend to vote for Labor, the Coalition, One Nation, independents or Greens — most Australians support a 25% flat tax on gas exports. We unpacked what a gas tax would mean for Australia at our sold-out panel event in Freo last week, ‘Big Gas is Taking the Piss’, co-hosted alongside the Australia Institute and featuring their co-CEO Richard Denniss. If we want to accelerate the renewable energy transition and relieve cost-of-living pressures, a gas tax is a no-brainer. Wherever you are, give your Federal MP a call today, and ask them to back a 25% tax on gas exports. Like Big Tobacco before it, Big Gas must pay — so make the call. Cheers, Gerard Mazza Fossil Fuels Program Manager Conservation Council of WA
Volunteer spotlight! 🏆 Our volunteers are making waves across Perth — and this month we want to shoutout Salwa. We met Salwa on her doorstep in Maylands, while doorknocking about the Browse gas project and its threat to climate and nature. Since then, Salwa has attended a townhall event, volunteered at two doorknocks and is a new member of the Go Beyond Gas Perth action team. She told us: “Today, there is so much information that can make us feel hopeless. When I had my door knocked on, I thought it could be more of the same or a salesperson. But overwhelmingly, it was a sense of hope that I gained talking to CCWA volunteers. I felt hope that people around me cared for the environment and our local community, and I felt like I could be a part of that.” That’s why we do this. Thank you, Salwa — we’re glad you answered the door. 🙌
Join us: Protest Woodside’s AGM on April 23 While the rest of us are squeezed by cost-of-living pressures and climate disasters, Woodside is set to pocket windfall profits from soaring gas prices — and is pushing ahead with plans to drill 57 gas wells at the pristine Scott Reef off the WA coast. Had enough? Join us outside Woodside’s 2026 Annual General Meeting on Thursday, April 23 at Kagoshima Park, Burswood. We’ll be there from 8am until 10am. The more of us there, the louder the message to investors, media and decision-makers: time’s up on fossil gas, and Scott Reef must be protected. This will be the biggest anti-Woodside protest of 2026. Be there.
Maylands rejects Woodside’s dirty gas CCWA volunteers have spoken to more than 200 households in Maylands as part of a door-to-door survey — and the results are in. Nearly three-quarters (74%) of residents oppose Woodside’s Browse gas project at Scott Reef. Meanwhile, only 20% said the gas industry makes a fair contribution to WA’s economy. Next up, we’ll be surveying the suburb of Mount Lawley. Join us on a door knock to keep building the case.
Our work relies on donations from everyday people like you. Can you chip in to be part of the movement to protect climate, nature and people from Big Gas?
We respectfully acknowledge the Whadjuk People of Noongar Boodjar, along with the Traditional Owners of all Countries where CCWA operates. We seek to always walk alongside our Aboriginal partners, and pay our respects to Elders past and present.
