Dear Clive, At the very northern edge of the Northern Jarrah Forests lies Julimar State Forest, a biodiverse haven of jarrah, marri, and wandoo forests teeming with life. Although classified as a biodiversity hotspot, at least 70% of its habitat has been lost to vegetation clearing and with increasing threats from prescribed burning, weeds, invasive species, and mining exploration, there is an urgent need for increased protection to conserve this remarkable natural ecosystem. Local community groups and conservation organisations are calling for Julimar State Forest to be reclassified as a National Park, granting it stronger protection status. To support this reclassification with scientific data, CCWA recently conducted a 2 day Citizen Science BioBlitz. CCWA’s very popular citizen science events are a fantastic opportunity for people of diverse abilities and backgrounds to come together, connect strongly with nature and learn about our incredible natural environments. For Citizen Science manager Kelly Sheldrick, outdoor surveys are a great way for people to appreciate their local environment. “Julimar State Forest is such a special place, full of unique plants and wildlife that you just don’t find anywhere else. It was amazing to see so many people come together for the BioBlitz, braving rain and mud, all because they care about protecting this beautiful forest. Events like this really show the community’s connection to nature and why it’s so important we work together to safeguard this place for generations to come.” Clive, will you support our Citizen Science program today with a tax-deductible donation? DONATE TODAY Despite pouring rain, mud, potholes and chilly mornings, almost 100 participants enthusiastically joined 25 surveys led by experts. Along with locals, many people came from Perth and further afield to be part of the weekend and see for themselves what’s at stake. Participants recorded their sightings on iNaturalist with over 360 species uploaded so far. From invertebrates to spiders, birds and orchids and a critically endangered woylie seen during a spotlighting survey, our citizen scientists were amazed at what they found when they looked closely with expert guidance. You can explore all the sightings here. The Julimar BioBlitz is just one of many citizen science events run throughout the year that are free to join and provide access to expert knowledge on a wide range of flora and fauna. CCWA is committed to continuing these accessible opportunities. Will you help us expand our program and engage communities and young people with an ongoing monthly donation? Become a Nature Protector Julimar BioBlitz was supported by the wonderful groups working to protect the area, and we are very fortunate to be able to work closely with people that share our common goal of environmental conservation. A huge thank you to Julimar Conservation and Forest Alliance, Noongar Kaartdijin Aboriginal Corporation and the experts and volunteers for their tireless efforts which helped make the event such a success. Thank you for supporting our work. You are part of a growing community taking action and speaking up to protect our vulnerable environment.
