By Clive Stubbington

Dear NRPG members and interested,

We are pleased to invite you to our upcoming presentation on Wed 22 April at 6pm for 6:30pm start, at the Kalamunda Hotel upstairs. Light snacks provided, gold coin entry, all ages welcome!

Is there a better way? Prescribed burns and mining in forests

WA Forest Alliance presentation

Jason Fowler (Senior Campaigner, WA Forest Alliance) , will provide a presentation on two main issues affecting the Jarrah forests around Kalamunda: Deforestation for bauxite mining  and prescribed burns.

6:30pm – 7:15pm with question time

The current situation of bauxite mining operations will be discussed including

  • Where bauxite mining is occurring today and the extent of future expansion plans.
  • The WA Environmental Protection Authority assessment process and where this is at
  • The federal environmental assessment process and the recent $55 million fine for illegal land clearing
  • The impact on the forest and surrounding communities if expansion plans are approved
  • How Kalamunda residents can take action

7:30pm – 8:15pm with question time

Prescribed burning and improving bushfire management

  • The current prescribed burning program undertaken by DBCA and the impact this is having on forest ecology and forest flammability.
  • Ways to improve bushfire detection and suppression using technological advancements which now allow firefighters to more rapidly detect and suppress bushfires. Fire cameras coupled with AI detection systems allow much faster detection of fires and provide improved situational awareness for firefighters – safer for everyone! Drones can now track lightning storms and greatly enhance detection for firefighters. Autonomous drones can now extinguish remote fires without risking the lives of firefighters. Infrared Satellite technology can now pinpoint hotspots and inbuilt AI systems can provide much faster intel.
  • How Kalamunda residents can take action

We look forward to seeing you there.

(Apologies to those who are not able to access via the stairs, and we are considering better accessibility in future. However, we will be able to share Jason’s presentation afterwards).

Kind regards,
Steve Gates
