Hi Clive,

The end of January brings that feeling up for me – where I think ‘it’s the end of January already?’ and then I feel like I’m peddling in cliches – but the thought persists. More broadly, the thought persists around the destruction of our land and the increasing impacts of a changing climate on our lives. It’s 2026 already – and what has been done? In truth, quite a bit, from this patch we’re all working on. It’s important to notice in a world where so much is competing for our attention.

Last year we all made a huge difference. We fought against a set of government laws that are failing to do what we need them to do. We didn’t get them all the way there, but the difference we all made is crucial as we move through this next decade. Softening climate collapse and ecological destruction relies on us actively making these differences – it’s not a zero-sum equation. And we are having an impact.

This year we are going to keep building that momentum to get real change. We will work to limit the expansive and unnecessary fossil fuel extraction that exists for the profits of private corporations. We will work to get action on water in a state where we see rainfall declining in our South West and we have foreign owned greed working to pump dangerous chemicals to frack our precious Kimberley. We will make noise for the threatened species and their habitat loss because they have a diminishing voice in their own survival.

There is a lot to do. We get to do it together. We will have plenty of opportunities to make a difference. Sign up for a doorknock with the Fossil Fuels team to engage new people, look out for key actions that will allow us to stand together in solidarity. I have to remind myself sometimes that I am one of many people who value this world and want a better future. I look forward to getting to connect with you all in 2026.

In solidarity,

Matt Roberts

Fossil fuels

Woodside posted its Fourth Quarter results in January, which showed that in 2025, it had produced more gas than ever before. And as Woodside keeps its foot on the gas, Australia is sweltering, as a direct result of burning gas and other fossil fuels. Heat records have been tumbling across the country. This summer, once again lives and homes have been lost to bushfires. The Pilbara region, where Woodside operates its North West Shelf gas processing facility, is at the brunt of this extreme weather. In the region where Woodside exports billions of dollars’ worth of gas from, communities are suffering as temperatures soar.  Over the summer, we’ve been out speaking to community members in the Maylands state electorate about Woodside’s further plans for expansion at the precious Scott Reef, and will hold a town hall meeting on 4 Feb. We’ll be scaling up these doorknocking efforts this year across multiple electorates – join us on the doors to keep building the political pressure.  Meanwhile, the WA EPA has recommended in favour of a Texan company fracking the precious Kimberley. Black Mountain Energy’s Valhalla project poses unacceptable risks to groundwater, endangered species and the Kimberley. Western Australia doesn’t want fracking in the Kimberley. Last year, the Labor party voted in favour of a state-wide ban. We’ve created a guide so you can appeal the EPA’s decision by giving the state government the evidence they need to reject this project.

Nature

Come show your love for nature! We have brand new ‘I 💚 Nature’ stickers along with our ‘Save the Black Cockatoo’ yard signs in the CCWA office. They’re free for you to collect – just reply to this email to let us know! Coming up, you’ll soon have an opportunity to engage with a public consultation on the future of Sandalwood harvesting from the wild. WA’s native sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) is a threatened species which has been unsustainably exploited since the 1840s. You can find out more here. If you get in quick, you can also help save Erindale Bushland by making a public comment by 2 Feb. Finally, in case you missed it, the Australian Conservation Foundation’s Extinction Wrapped Reportshines a light on loss of critical species in Western Australia, and we’ve also been sounding the alarm on Alcoa’s alleged breachof a Mining Exemption Order in the Northern Jarrah Forest.

In January, we completed the annual Balijup fauna monitoring with Green Skills, along with our ongoing monthly bat box monitoring with the City of Canning. Work has also continued on reports from last year, including the Julimar Bioblitz and Joker’s Tunnel. We’re also focused on planning and preparation for another exciting year ahead! You can find out more about our work and sign up for updates here

Opportunities

Finally, there are a couple of job openings in our network at the moment, so please do apply or spread the word:

Thank you

Clive, everything we do is made possible because of people like you. This year, we’re ready to show once again that together, we’re a mighty force for nature. Will you make a donation, to help make 2026 our strongest year for environmental protection?
