Forest Matters Feb 2024
Latest forest updates from WAFA
Dear Steve Jess Beckerling is taking on a new role as Executive Director of Conservation Council of WA (CCWA). Jess has worked with WAFA for 13 years, during which we achieved a policy change to end native forest logging in WA and fought hard on many other campaigns. Personally, during this time Jess has been the recipient of the CCWA Bessie Rischbieth Conservation Award (2015), Bob Brown Foundation Environmentalist of the Year Award (2021) and was inducted into the WA Women’s Hall of Fame (2023). “It is a big move after so long with WAFA, but I am very excited and motivated to work with CCWA on climate action and nature protection, especially at this critical time for the organisation and the campaigns. I am also comforted to know that I will remain very connected and involved with the forest movement and campaign” said Jess. “It has been a huge joy and privilege working with WAFA for all of these years, and I am incredibly proud of everything we’ve achieved together over the years. I know that the resilience, skill and collaborative culture in WAFA will mean that it will reshape to become stronger than ever.” Whilst we are sad to no longer have Jess at the helm of WAFA as Convenor and Campaign Director, we are excited to work with her in this new capacity through our partnerships with CCWA. We know she will bring a huge strength to the team with her strategic mind, engaging leadership and passion for biodiversity and climate. Thank you Jess for your ongoing dedication and deep love for the forests. Save our EPA Rally Caving into pressure from industry groups, and with no community consultation, the Cook Labor government has announced plans that will undermine WA’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). This is in addition to the Government’s recent, preemptive decision to hand Alcoa an exemption order which will allow them to keep clearing Jarrah forests, even whilst the EPA assesses their plans. We know that it is impossible to regrow these ancient, highly biodiverse forests after clearing and mining. Once they’re gone, they’re gone forever. We need to advocate now for stronger environmental assessment processes, and the right to be informed, participate in, and challenge decisions about our precious environment. On the first sitting day of 2024, please join us as groups and individuals from across the state rally on the steps of Parliament for better protections for our EPA and WA’s nature. To protect the living systems on which we all depend, we need our EPA to be rigorous, science-based, independent and consultative. Petition to protect Julimar Forest With a rush on mineral exploration the State Government must step in and protect Julimar Forest by making it a National Park. Julimar is home to the critically endangered Woylies, as well as Chuditch and Carnabys. For more information visit the Julimar Conservation and Forest Alliance website here. Make sure to sign the petition before it closes this Sunday 11 February. Black Cockatoo Crisis on TV Black Cockatoo Crisis is now available to watch from the comfort of your own home on SBS on demand. Tell your friends and spread the word about how our endangered black cockatoos are losing their critical nesting hollows and other habitat. Vital foraging habit for black cockatoos is at risk from waves of destruction. Precious Banksia Woodland and a Conservation Category Wetland in Jandakot will be destroyed if a proposed surf park is allowed to be built. Tell the Labor Government that a clearing permit must not be granted as it would cause the death and displacement of countless animals! Email your local MP now, using Urban Bushland Council’s easy template. Fragments of a Lost Eden ‘Colonialised Landscape’ by Emily ten Raa Fragments of a Lost Eden by Emily ten Raa shares a personal vision of the forest, alongside a pronounced concern for its fragmented and vulnerable condition, and for its future. This solo exhibition by Emily ten Raa is comprised of oil paintings on salvaged South Western Australian timber and canvas. The works are the result of Emily’s field trips to the Northern Jarrah Forests surrounding Dwellingup in 2023, and of her involvement with WA Forest Alliance. Emily is very generously donating all proceeds from works sold to WAFA. Opens Saturday 17 February at 2pm, exhibition continues to March 16. Lost Eden Gallery, 58 McLarty Street, Dwellingup WA Film screening – THE GIANTS Tickets are almost sold out to upcoming screening of THE GIANTS presented in partnership with Paddy Pallin, but there’s still a couple left so get in quick! All proceeds from ticket sales go WAFA and we’ll be raising funds on the night with merch for sale. “If you’ve despaired that you can’t make a difference, watch THE GIANTS. A profoundly optimistic film, it reminds us of the magnitude of our improbable wins, how much more we can do, and the radiant glory of what is still at stake. Every Australian needs to see it.” Geraldine Brooks – Pultzer Prize Winner & Author.
