South32 massive expansion of bauxite mining in our forests – Please make a quick submission

By Steve Gates

Dear NRPG members and interested,

South32 is intending to expand their bauxite mining in our northern Jarrah forests (NJF), in addition to the massive expansion plans by Alcoa.

The expansions result in permanent destruction of our forests not only because the key part of the soil and hydrology is destroyed – the caprock is completely removed. All attempts to revegetate over the past 50 years have failed to regenerate to the original forest ecosystem.

The areas proposed in total are a significant portion of all our forests and in the face of all the other threats of climate change (lower rainfall, increasing temperatures), dieback, prescribed burning, our forests are on the brink of collapse.

Please take a few minutes to make a quick submission or action, and share this with others!

Kind regards,
Steve Gates

Hi NJF alliance,
We’ve finished our guide to appeal against the EPA’s recommendation to conditionally approve South32’s mine expansion…You’ll find we have tried to support the conditions that have been recommended whilst saying they fall short and the project should overall be rejected.

The guide is attached and can also be found on our website here wafa.org.au/resources

Please consider making an appeal as an individual and/or on behalf of your group by Monday evening.

Appeals close this Monday 29 July 11:59pm but we also have an email action to Whitby calling for the project to be rejected which will continue actionnetwork.org/letters/reject-south32

If you’re able to share with your networks at all that would be much appreciated.

You can also find social media graphics for both actions in the folder below.

You’ll also find posts on WAFA’s social pages appearing very shortly for an easy share.
