Please make a brief submission by 2 Mar 2023: Perth Airport proposes to clear more bushland, wetlands and threaten our Black Cockatoos

By Steve Gates

Perth Airport proposes to clear more bushland, wetlands and further threaten the survival of our Black Cockatoos:

The Nature Reserves Preservation Group of Kalamunda (NRPG) and the Urban Bushland Council of WA (UBC) urges you to make a brief submission to save some of the last natural areas on Perth Airport, which include:

  • ‘Banskia Woodlands of the Swan Coastal Plain’, Threatened Ecological Communities (TECs) and Matters of National Environmental Significance (MNES))
  • Wetlands
  • WA State recognised ‘Bush Forever’ sites
  • Aboriginal Heritage sites such as Munday Swamp
  • Foraging areas for the endangered Black Cockatoos

Unfortunately, the weaknesses in Australia’s environment laws (the EPBC Act) have allowed Perth Airport’s to destroy much of these for developments, and furthermore which are not aviation-related, but for commercial use, simply to increase Perth Airport’s revenue.

However, with the recent commitments by Environment Minister Plibersek, we now have an opportunity to take a stand collectively to stop this latest destructive ‘Airport North’ Major Development Plan (on the south side of Kalamunda Rd).

The MDP documents are very large, so to assist you to make a brief submission by 2 March, see the attached ‘Submission Guide’ with further background and points to make.

Please feel free to share and encourage others to do so – we need to ‘draw a line in the sand’.

Kind regards,
Steve Gates, President NRPG Inc
