Dear Members, Supporters & beyond,

Black Cockatoo Crisis – Documentary by Jane Hammond – looks at the plight of our black cockatoos and what we can do to save them from extinction –

As you are well aware, Western Australia’s iconic black cockatoos are under threat.Their numbers have fallen dramatically over the past few decades, mainly due to land clearing. All three species could become extinct in just 20 years unless something is done to protect their habitats. There are fewer than 40,000 Carnaby’s Cockatoos, 4,000 Baudins and 10,000 Forest Red-tailed black cockatoos left.

As banksia woodlands on the Swan Coastal Plain continue to be cleared for housing, Carnaby’s Black Cockatoos have come to depend on the once extensive pine plantations on Perth’s northern fringe. The pines supply up to half of the food needed to keep the urban population of Carnaby’s alive. But within the next two years, the remaining 5000ha of pines are slated for clearing – with no replanting program – leaving the cockatoos facing possible starvation.

Meanwhile, Baudin’s Black Cockatoos searching for food are being shot out of the sky by apple and pear growers in Perth’s hills. And the Forest Red-tailed Forest Black Cockatoos are threatened by the loss of nesting hollows and declining habitat.

The clock is ticking.

Will we act in time to save them?

The documentary gives us HOPE and ACTIONS that we can do that could make the difference for these iconic blacColma Keating <[email protected]>k cockatoos.
