CCWA Member Update: Welcome to 2024! – New major threats to WA’s environment laws
Dear NRPG members and interested,
For your information from our peak WA environment body, the Conservation Council.
I would recommend looking at the online briefing mentioned below, regarding the new major threat to the State’s nature laws, and stay tuned for more campaign action to protect our environment and EPA from this.
Kind regards,
Steve Gates,
President, NRPG Bushcarers
CCWA Member Update: Welcome to 2024!
Kaya and Happy New Year,
I hope you’ve all had a restful break over the holiday period. We’re back into the swing of things at CCWA and getting ourselves ready for a big 2024 continuing to promote a more sustainable WA that protects our natural environment.
Throughout 2024 we are looking forward to working alongside members on our shared mission, recognising that the tireless work of member groups every day is what gives our movement strength. I’m eager to hear from all our members on how we can better work to support your work and am able to schedule meetings, calls or coffee to discuss your ideas.
This year I’ll be working to schedule more member seminars/webinars to give members more opportunities to hear from and work with CCWA staff and programs. Please let me know if you have any suggestions on the topics, you’d like us to cover.
EPA Reforms threatening WA’s nature
Late last year we learned of the Cook Government’s moves to overhaul WA’s environmental assessment system and undermine the independence of the Environmental Protection Authority. Since then, CCWA has been working with partners and member groups on our response to this major threat to the State’s nature, including convening an online briefing for our movement to discuss the matter.
The recording is available here, and you can access the PowerPoint slides here.
Since then, CCWA has convened a working group to drive a campaign against these reforms and in favour of a better environmental protection framework for Western Australia. As I’m sure you’re acutely aware, standing up a broad public campaign can’t happen overnight, but we have been buoyed by the members and individuals who have already put their hand up to help drive and support the campaign.
We will update you very soon on the next steps of this campaign including future actions, in the meantime there are a few things that you can do;
- Promote emailing the Premier and MPs to your mailing list – Now is the time to send an email to the WA Premier and your MP expressing your concerns, advocating for the EPA to remain independent – and to be strengthened – to protect our environment. You can do so here.
- Express interest in helping the campaign – Confronting this challenge will require increased capacity and a collaborative effort across the conservation sector. Please fill in this form to join the campaign.
- Attend our next Environment Matters forum – This is taking place on Monday Feb 12, 6:00pm at the State Library Theatre. Capacity is limited and RSVPs are filling up fast so get in quick! More information and RSVPs can be found here.
Thank you for your support and assistance on this pressing matter thus far.
Update on CCWA Director Recruitment
Just a brief update on this. The recruitment process for a new CCWA Director is well underway with interviews scheduled to take place in the coming weeks. We’ll keep you updated once a Director has been appointed.
Showcase your events!
We’re wanting to assist groups showcase and promote member group events through our CCWA networks in 2024. We’ll be phasing this up over the coming months, starting with promoting events through these member updates and eventually to promotion through our website and social media accounts. If you have any events you’d like us to promote, please fill in this form with the details and I’ll include it in the next member update.
That’s it for me at the moment, please don’t hesitate to get in contact if you have any queries, ideas or suggestions. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
In Solidarity,
Dylan
