BREAKING: First major NT fracking project just approved – we need you!

By Steve Gates

Dear NRPG members and interested,

This is a ‘foot in the door’ toward a major climate and healthy water and land threat.

The International Energy Agency, IPCC and other organisations have stated that we cannot be opening up new fossil fuel projects after 2021, and yet in 2024 our state and federal government is still approving new gas and coal projects.

There is a remaining option to stop this as below…

Kind regards,
Steve Gates

President, NRPG Bushcarers

Urgent action needed

Frack Free NTDear Steve,It’s what we’ve been fearing – the NT Government has just given environmental approval for Tamboran’s first fracking “production” project to go ahead. This means they can now start work on their 12 new fracking wells, without even doing an Environmental Impact Statement. However, there is still one clear and simple way for this to be stopped – Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek can use her “water trigger” powers, and require the project to be independently assessed at a Federal Government level for its impacts on water resources before it can start. We’ve signed petitions and asked politely in meetings, but Minister Plibersek still hasn’t acted. That’s why we need to ramp things up. Can you please call her today and demand she use the water trigger?  We know we can’t trust the NT Government to stop fracking, so now it’s up to us to make sure Tanya Plibersek hears our voices loud and clear that we want the water trigger to be used immediately! Please call:Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek – (02) 6277 7920 We know that calling politicians can be daunting, but this is the most effective thing we can do right now to try and stop these projects from going ahead. So please call! And tell your friends to call as well! Here’s some quick tips for your call:When you call you’ll speak to one of the office staff who are obliged to take down your concerns and requests, please be polite.Ask them to take down your name and details and to promise they will pass on your concerns directly to the politician you are calling. Tell them you’re urgently asking Minister Plibersek to use the water trigger on Tamboran’s fracking proposal that was just approved by the NT. If they tell you that “the Federal Environment Department is conducting a review into NT fracking companies to check their compliance with regulations”You can say that Minister Plibersek can use the water trigger at any time. She doesn’t need to wait for this “review” and it is now absolutely urgent and critical that she uses the water trigger on the Tamboran project before they start fracking.  Tell them how important this issue is to you (e.g. if it’s important enough to affect how you will vote in upcoming elections). This is a really dark day for the Territory, but we can still stop these projects from going ahead. This ain’t over by a long shot – please call today! We’ve managed to keep the NT free from fracking for so many years with your help – we know that what we do together has an impact. We’re never going to back down. In hope,Hannah & the team at Frack Free NT

P.S. if you are from the NT please also call these important NT decision-makers: Senator Malarndirri McCarthy – (08) 8941 0003, andMarion Scrymgour MP – (08) 8952 9696
