ACF Perth Group Meeting tomorrow night please join us + October newsletter & Events

By Steve Gates

Dear NRPG members and interested,

There may be some upcoming events of interest to you, by the Australian Conservation Foundation Perth branch…

Kind regards,
Steve Gates

President, NRPG Bushcarers

Hi and Greetings,

As the school holidays are here, the weather invites us to step out and enjoy the great outdoors. Spring has arrived, filling our suburbs with the delightful sounds of birds and an array of vibrant spring blooms.

The Nyoongar Calendar tells us that October marks the beginning of Kambarang, the second spring—a season of birth and longer dry periods.

In This Issue

Our monthly meeting will include guest speakers, Jeff Wilson and Joyce Erceg from Citizens’ Climate Lobby Australia to talk about Climate policy and carbon pricing. Welcoming words from our Chair Maureen, Kings Park planting dates, news about our monthly stalls, and an upcoming event – a Spring Nature walk.

  1. Words from our Chair

Kaya and welcome. Greetings to our new and older members. There’s always a lot happening in the nature  and climate change space. We’d love you to become active in the group, join or initiate events and to know that you have our support.  We want to make change for the better and be part of a group of like-minded folk to build strong people power in our communities.

Our regular activities are a monthly meeting with a guest presenter, a monthly market stall to talk about nature and climate with many amazing people in our communities, meetings with MPs, teaming up with Friends of Kings Park and others for planting, seed collecting and more.

Here is what’s coming up and we’re seeking volunteers: –

MP meetings

We have nominated the endangered numbat as a symbol for our ACF Perth group. There are only about 1000 adult numbats left in the wild and Perth Zoo has an important breeding program. In October, we will speak with a WA Senator about numbats as one of many endangered species, threatened by loss of habitat from logging, fires and climate change. We’ll be asking the Senator to call for strong amendments to the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act to better protect our native animals. Please join us. RSVP to this newsletter if you’d like to be part of the group.

Our recent MP meetings have included the Advisor to Dr Anne Aly, Minister for Youth. We have a meeting in October with Advisors to Chris Bowen, Minister for Climate and Energy. In WA, our carbon emissions are still increasing with proposed extensions of the Woodside Burrup LNG plant and with intentions to commence fracking in the Kimberley and elsewhere. We are calling on our government representatives to listen to our concerns about WAs huge contribution to GHG emissions. It does make a difference.

ACF Community Perth on Facebook/meta

Check our ACF Community Perth group on Facebook to hear quickly about our events and other local groups and campaigns. The Go Beyond Gas campaign is asking us to write to WA Environment Minister Reece Whitby, asking him to keep gas in the ground and not to approve expansion of the NW gas processing hub. Sign the petition or send a hand-written letter, even better.

  1. Monthly Meeting: Tomorrow Night –  Tuesday, October 10 at 7pm

We again have details of our monthly meeting with Guest Speakers, Jeff Wilson and Joyce Erceg from Citizens’ Climate Lobby Australia to talk about how you can help the climate and put money in your own pocket at the same time. Money flows around our economic system in some strange ways, we incentivise the wrong things (did someone mention fossil fuel subsidies?) but we can change that with some fresh thinking. Come and learn how you can help.  Join us on:

When: Tuesday, October 10th,

Time: at 7 PM

Where: Tom Dadour Community Centre, 363 Bagot Rd, Subiaco WA 6008,

  1. Monthly Stalls

On 9th September we held a welcoming stall at Kyilla Farmers Market in North Perth.  We met some amazing people (as well as some lovely  friendly dogs ) all keen to have a chat, sign our Nature Petition and many signing up to be part of our Perth Local Group.  Thanks Angela, Phil, Pippin, Joyce, Maureen, and Blair we did a great job!

And if you haven’t already feel free to sign the petition here! https://www.acf.org.au/perth-nature-petition
