Your chance to save the Northern Jarrah Forest!

By Steve Gates

Dear NRPG members and interested,

Please take a moment to stand up to save our forests from further destructive mining, which permanently destroys the areas. Forest Ecology Scientists have demonstrated that the last 50 years of ‘rehabilitation’ has not worked, and will not work because conditions now are completely different.

You can either make a brief submission using the Guide, or sign on to the WA Forest Alliance submission.

Kind regards,

Steve Gates

Secretary, NRPG Bushcarers

It’s time to have your say, and do your part to end forest mining.  Mining companies are circling the Northern Jarrah Forest (NJF) seeking approval from the State Government to clear huge areas of Jarrah forest ecosystems for minerals.  The NJF is incredibly precious. These forests are home to an astounding number of plants and animals that exist nowhere else on Earth; they provide critical habitat for endangered species including mainland Quokkas and Black Cockatoos, they store and draw down huge volumes of carbon from the atmosphere, regulate rainfall and temperature along the Darling Scarp and are the catchment for major rivers from Perth down to Collie.

These forests are completely unique, evolved to grow on the bauxite rich soil of WA’s Darling Range into one of the world’s most biodiverse temperate forests. Alcoa has proposed clearing a further 11,500ha of this forest, without the ability to restore it.  For the first time in 60 years, the public can comment on Alcoa’s mining activities in the Northern Jarrah Forest. You can have your say, by making a submission to the EPA. We’ve been hard at work preparing a guide to help you in your submission, that sums up thousands of pages of Alcoa’s documents.  See the submission guide Submissions can be made until August 21st, 2025.  There’s more information contained in the guide about different ways you can submit. You are encouraged to expand on any sections and add your own personal experience and views, including why you value the NJF. The EPA is keen to hear what the NJF means to you. If you can’t make a submission, we urge you to sign on to WAFA’s submission to the EPA.  Add my name  If you have more questions about the guide, making a submission, or you just want to chat, send us an email at [email protected]For the forests, Jess Boyce | DirectorWA Forest Alliance    We acknowledge and pay our respects to the traditional owners of the southwest forests across the Noongar/Bibbulmun nation. This always was and always will be Aboriginal land.wafa.org.auStay connected with us and follow us on Facebook, InstagramBlueSkyX/TwitterTikTokLinkedin.
