The fight for forests isn’t over!
![]() Dear Clive, Since 1990, the WA Forest Alliance (WAFA) has been at the forefront of forest conservation, uniting many groups to protect the Southwest native forests and wildlife. Our collaborative efforts have led to significant milestones, including an end to native forest logging in January 2024. But we could not have achieved this without supporters like you! We thank you for your recent donation to us which will help us as we continue the fight for forests. WA’s forests still face huge challenges: Clearing for mining: Mining in forests is endangering nature and drinking water. The WA public now has first opportunity in 60 years to comment on Alcoa’s mining operations and plans to clear thousands of hectares of precious habitat. At the same time, many exploration licenses continue to be applied for all over the Southwest forests in the hopes of finding more minerals to dig up. An outdated prescribed burn program: Frequent, large-scale prescribed burns in the Southwest forests and woodlands threaten biodiversity and aren’t always reducing the risk of bushfires. We’re calling for more resources to detect and put fires out quickly, and for the fires that are lit, to be at the right time, in the right place and done in the right way. Ensuring thinning is actually ecological: Ecological thinning removes select trees with the intention to improve forest health in a drying climate. We’re keeping watch to scrutinise whether research supports the claims, the benefits outweigh the risks, such as understory loss, spread of disease and soil compaction, and the program isn’t just for timber supply. Safeguarding forests: We’re holding the WA Government to their commitment to expand protected areas across the Southwest forests to nearly 2 million hectares by 2033. This must be done in a timely manner whilst ensuring the highest cultural and conservation values are protected appropriately. We need to end forest mining and ensure forests are appropriately managed for wildlife habitat, biodiversity, climate, water, culture and communities. Your donation empowers us to: Advocate for stronger environmental protections Conduct vital research and monitoring Pursue legal avenues Reach wider audiences through advertising and media Engage communities through education, events and vital conversations As of November 2024, all donations to WAFA are tax-deductible – so, if you can, any further help you can provide before June 30 would be greatly appreciated. Donate now Together, we can ensure the preservation of Western Australia’s forests for generations to come.
