We’re a big step closer to protecting the Kimberley
![]() Dear Steve, We have incredible news to share with you. This weekend, WA Labor delegates voted to support a motion calling for a total ban on fracking in Western Australia. This is a massive shift in the political landscape – and it happened because of the tireless work of people like you, and Labor members and unions who have advocated for this from within caucus. Photo by Wendy Mitchell/Environs KimberleyYour efforts showing up at key MP’s offices worked. Your calls worked. Your voices were heard.Since the state election, you’ve refused to let the Kimberley fade into the background, and together we’ve continued to build on the momentum. You’ve been calling and emailing MPs, sharing stories about why the Kimberley must be protected, and rallied at Parliament. This motion proves that grassroots community power can shift the political conversation, even on an issue where vested interests run deep. This is a huge moment for the Kimberley and for everyone who loves this iconic region. But our work isn’t finished. While this motion shows the growing momentum for a fracking ban, Premier Roger Cook still needs to act. Right now, the WA EPA is deciding whether to recommend approval for the Valhalla fracking project – 20 exploration wells that could open the door to 2,000 wells across the Kimberley. Our next steps are clear:Keep the pressure on Premier Cook to honour this motion by his party and commit to protecting the Kimberley from fracking.Be prepared to appeal if the WA EPA recommends the Valhalla project goes ahead. The Kimberley’s ancient landscapes, pristine waterways, and living Aboriginal culture are too precious to risk for a dying industry. This motion shows that more and more West Australians agree – and WA Labor is prepared to back them. We’ll be in touch very soon with more ways you can take action to keep this momentum building. For now, thank you, Steve! Every call you made, every event or action you turned up at, every conversation you had with your community, helped make this happen. Together, we’re proving that the Kimberley is worth fighting for. For the Kimberley,Simone and Claire, Lock the Gate Alliance |
