End Forest Mining – Alcoa Submission Package

By Steve Gates

Dear NRPG members and interested,

Here is an important reminder from the Conservation Council of WA, to have your say on the disastrous proposal to massively expand mining in our forests.

Note the upcoming event in Kalamunda on Wed 13 August, and another last opportunity online on Mon, 18 August.

Please share widely – we must stop this because once our forests have been cleared and mined of the caprock containing bauxite, it’s not reversible to the forest’s original state.

Kind regards,
Steve Gates

Secretary, NRPG Bushcarers

My name’s Greta,

I’m part of the Nature Team at CCWA. I’m reaching out today with regards to Alcoa’s Bauxite mining expansion proposal which is currently open for public comment. Alcoa’s plan will see 11,500ha of Jarrah forest cleared, risk contamination of Serpentine and Mundaring catchments – Perth’s drinking water supply! – and affect endangered and iconic forest species. This is the first time in 60 years of operation that Alcoa’s mining plans are going to public comment so we’re really trying to engage the community to have their say. The public comment period ends August 21st.

We have some upcoming events and related resources that Nature Reserves Preservation Group might be interested in, I’m passing them on in case you see the opportunity to share with your network.

We’ve organized a series of Town Hall Events across the wider metropolitan area. All dates and booking links can be found through this link. But the remaining events are:

Mandurah: Tuesday August 05 2025 5:00 PM | Peel Harvey Catchment Council, 58 Sutton Street, Mandurah

Kalamunda: Wednesday August 13 2025 6:00 PM | Kalamunda Community Centre, Hedley Jorgensen Park, 2 Crescent Rd, Kalamunda

We’ve also put together a Submission Writing Guide for anyone who wants to write their own submission, and a Submission Party Resource Pack for anyone who wants to host their own submission writing workshop at home or in their community. We also have a proforma where we are collecting signatories to our submission, so this link may be the most straightforward if you haven’t seen it already.

If you have any questions, or if something isn’t clear, please let me know!
