Australia’s new National Environmental Standards are open for public comment until 30 Jan 2026

By Steve Gates

Dear NRPG members and interested,

The Committee hopes you had a lovely break and wishes you a happy new year!

As you may recall, in October last year, the federal government passed new National Environmental laws for Australia, which are generally considered to be significantly improved over the old EPBC Act of 1999.

There are various sections of the laws of which the details are still to be finalised, and the first of these is the new “draft National Environmental Standard” (NES) for:

  • Matters of National Environmental Significance (MNES)
  • Environmental Offsets

This is now open for public comment until 30 Jan 2026 at:

Have your say: draft National Environmental Standards – DCCEEW

NRPG and other environmental organisations will be making submissions.

We encourage you to have your say on these important details as it will affect our Environment for many years to come!

Kind regards,
Steve Gates
